How to Paint Your Wooden Picket Fence

The best way to paint a wooden picket fence depends on who you ask. If you were to follow Tom Sawyer’s advice, you should gather up all of your friends and trick them into painting your fence for you. However, you may not be that persuasive. A white picket fence is classic, and is sure to look great with any home.

To get the perfect white picket fence, follow these steps…

Step 1. Gather all of your materials…

  • Orbital sander
  • White paint
  • White primer
  • Paint scraper
  • Paint strainer
  • Airless spray gun
  • A few buckets
  • Drop cloths

Step 3. Use the orbital sander to sand down the flat sides of the pickets. This should smooth the pickets as well as removing large chunks of loose paint or chipped wood. Start with a one hundred grit sand disk. Ensure that all of the dust is gone from the fence before  continuing on for a smooth flat finish.
Step 4. Strain the wood primer and paint using the paint strainer and bucket s you brought with you.
Step 5. Get your air gun and fill up the reservoir with the wood primer.
Step 6. Cover any plants or flowers that might get in the way of your spraying with the drop cloths.
Step 7. Adjust the spray gun for a fine mist and start applying an even coating to the fence.
Step 8. Try to angle the nozzles to get in between the pickets but never enough in one place to start the primer running. Keep it smooth and even.
Step 9. Once all of the pickets are done you will have to wait for them to dry completely before moving forward.
Step 10. Using the same steps as before, apply the paint to the fence then let it dry completely.
Step 11. You will probably need to go back and touch up a few random areas by hand that the spray gun missed.
