It is often the simple things that turn out to be the hardest. Calling for a free fence quote shouldn’t be that difficult but what do you ask them?
Most people aren’t fence experts so when it comes time to get one built they have no idea what to say.
Don’t worry. Your fencing contractor will be able to answer all of your questions for you and they are used to dealing with first time buyers. But if you want to cover all of your bases so you are prepared to talk with your fence contractor then you should ask yourself these questions…
What will a fence contractor need to know?
What type of fence are you interested in?
There are a lot of different types and each has a different use. Are you trying to keep your dog in the backyard or are you trying to keep your neighbors from spying on you in the hot tub?
How much area do you need to cover?
You don’t need to be exact but you should have a general idea about how long the fence will be. Some materials are perfect for small areas but they would be too expensive for a long distance.
Do you have a style in mind?
Do you want a fence that matches your house or have you seen one in a magazine that you fell in love with?
Where do you live?
This is more important than you may think. The soil changes depending on your location as does local zoning, home owner association bylaws and the cost of materials.
How much can you spend?
Some people get scared off when a contractor asks them about their budget but it is a valid question. If you are trying to stay on a budget then it means that some fencing options are out of reach so why bother hearing about the ones you can’t afford?
Do you already have landscaping in place?
When you install a fence on an established yard there is a lot to look out for. You may have to work around sprinkler lines, underground utilities and other obstacles. Plus, if you are using a sprinkler system, you have to ensure it is not dousing the fence every time it turns on. That kind of constant exposure to moisture will cause a wooden fence to rot very quickly and it wouldn’t do a metallic fence any favors either.
