Chain link fences are an extremely economical way to add a little security to your property. You can find them in all facets of business and government or residential settings. They are used in everything from athletic stadiums, government installations, prisons, factories and almost anything else you can think of. They are not as often seen in a residential setting outside of the occasional backyard for one simple reason: appearance. Chain link fencing is utilitarian and it is hard to hide that fact. The steel open mesh can be off putting to some people and they look especially bad if they haven’t been treated because they will start to rust.
If you have a chain link fence that you would prefer to camouflage, the following five steps is just what you are looking for:
- The best way to hide a chain link fence is to let a hanging plant or vine take it over. You will need to find a perennial or annual vine that you like and get seeds for it. If you don’t mind the extra work, annual vines grow quickly but you will need to replant them every year. Perennials grow a bit slower but they will be in place permanently so make sure that you can live with them before you plant them. A few good choices for perennials are Boston ivy, English ivy and Clematis.
- To make the ground ready for planting you need to remove all the grass within 5 inches of the fence. Then cultivate the soil down to a depth of about five inches.
- Go down the fence line planting the seeds around every three inches. Read up on your seeds because some varieties need to be soaked in water for a time before planting. Once the seeds are down, cover them with half an inch of dirt and water them.
- Keep a watch on the soil to ensure it retains enough moisture during the growing season.
- When the vines start growing, weave them through the fence mesh to train them. Gradually they will get the idea and cover over the fence.
