We build fences for various reasons, for safety, security, to block out sound and wind, and to improve our privacy. So when you plan a new fence, consider your needs first to ensure that the type and style of fence you choose will meet your needs and those of your family.
Privacy Fence Types
Generally, any fence that is able to block an area from sight may be considered a privacy fence. However, privacy fences should also block out sound, at least to a certain extent, particularly if you live in a community where lots are small and neighbors are close by.
For this reason, the best fences for privacy will be high enough to prevent people peeping over them, and solid enough to restrict transmission of sound, so your conversations won’t be easily overheard.
There are many different privacy fence types and styles although most are manufactured from wood, PVC, or vinyl. Generally, while chain link and metal fences are great for safety and security, they won’t create a sense of privacy unless they are combined with planting or covered in some other way.
Custom wood privacy fences are particularly popular and very effective. Whether made from pine or cedar, and with boards, panels, or vertical slats, they can be designed in a wide variety of styles. An added bonus is that they can be used to increase security and to keep pets and children inside the backyard too.
Similarly, PVC and vinyl fences may also be used for all of the above. More expensive but generally lower in maintenance costs, they are versatile and highly durable.
Commercial Privacy Fences
While the average commercial operation wants security fencing for their properties, solid dumpster enclosures and other forms of commercial privacy fences are popular, particularly those made from wood, vinyl, and PVC.
Chain link, steel, and aluminum fences will deter people from dumping their waste illegally, but they won’t provide the same degree of privacy a solid fence will provide. So, if you want to screen your commercial property – or part of it – from passers-by a solid privacy fence or even a partial enclosure is the answer.
